PROCOL HARUM "LIVE" 7-5-1974 FROM JANUARY SOUND KZEW 98FM THE ZOO BROADCAST MASTER RECORDING REEL TO REEL DALLAS, TEXAS. Letter from Tye Robison-Partner/Owner of January Sound Studio Dallas, Texas. On July 5th 1974, Procol Harum performed live for an episode of "Live From January Sound, " a radio series featuring live rock performances on Dallas' KZEW-FM. The broadcasts originated from local recording studio, January Sound Studios. This performance is well known to ardent Procol Harum fans, and low-quality bootlegs were traded for many years.(probably home tapings of the FM broadcast) Often listed at 7-4-74 the exact date was the 5th of July 1974. I have the original master tape for this concert, in a format that is likely superior to any previously known version.
It is a stereo, 2-track, 1/4 tape. In 1998, my partners and I bought the recording studio facility that January Sound had eventually moved to in 1976. S ome of the unclaimed tapes from the 70s were kept for fun and posterity. Over the last 24 years, I have been able to reunite many of the tapes with interested parties, for example, Willie Nelson and the estate of the Doors' Ray Manzarek.
KZEW-FM had disappeared in 1990. I tried many times over the years to let somebody know about the existence of the Procol Harum tape, but could never get anyone to claim it or pay attention to it. I posted on a Procol Harum internet fan forum, tried to contact band member / songwriter Gary Brooker's management, and tried to contact a label that has released a version of the concert. I never heard back from anyone, Fast forward to Dec 31, 2022 January Sound Studio closed the doors after 50 years and this is one of the last surviving tapes we have to offer NOW or EVER to anyone that is a true fan of the Procol Harum and an opportunity to own a peice of Rock n Roll History.
I can vouch that from 1998, when I took possession of the tape, it has not been played, baked, or tampered with in any way, and has been stored in the studio tape archive, in a non-smoking, temp controlled environment. It is possible it has not been played since 1974.It appears to be the broadcast master tape, with a paper marker in the middle, probably indicating the midpoint commercial break, which can be heard here in the original broadcast.
